Concrete Design

Concrete Design Codes and Standards - that is Engineered Construction - deals with concrete as it is designed and used in buildings, structures and other construction projects. The current main British Standards and codes for concrete design and construction are:

  • BS 8110 Structural use of concrete. Part 1: 1997 Code of practice for design and construction.
  • BS 5400 Steel, concrete and composite bridges Part 4: 1990 Code of practice for design of concrete bridges.
  • BS 1987: 8007 Code of practice for Design of concrete structures for retaining aqueous liquids.
  • BS 6349 Maritime Structures. Part 1:2000 Code of practice for general criteria.

These British Standards will eventually be withdrawn and replaced by British/European Standard BS EN 1992-1:2004 Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures. There will be a five-year period (starting from 2004) where the new BS EN will co-exist with the British Standard listed above.

  • BS EN 1992, Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures.

To make the transition to Eurocode 2 as painless as possible, please visit http://www.eurocode2.info.htm/. The site aims to provide you with an overall appreciation of Eurocode 2 and help with its introduction and interpretation.
