BCA Code of Practice for waste-derived fuels
In March 1999, the British Cement Association first published a
Code of Practice on the Use of Secondary Liquid Fuels in Cement
Kilns. This related to operational and communication issues
associated with burning these materials.
The range of waste-derived fuels currently burned in cement
kilns now includes: packaging waste; meat and bone meal; processed
sewage pellets; used tyres; as well as used solvents (secondary
liquid fuels).
More stringent legislation has now been introduced and includes:
Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) Directive; Waste
Incineration Directive (WID); Public Participation Directive
(PPD).
In consultation with the Environment Agency, BCA has updated its
earlier Code to take account of the changes in legislation, and
produced a new Code of Practice for the Use of Waste-derived
Fuels. The Code provides for additional consultation when a
new fuel is burned for the first time.
